something is creating nonsense directories & files

Question

Something is creating nonsense directories (2 at a time) & files in the root directory on each of the HDDs attached to this computer. Directory names always start with an a, b, c, x, y, or z & almost appear to be legitimate directories. The 15 to 20 files inside all have a different file extension but they are nonsense as the associated program is unable to open the file. The only bright spot is that the directories are easily deleted but they re-appear within 3 minutes with different names.
