Microsoft Lifts Windows 11 24H2 Upgrade Block for Affected Intel PCs

Microsoft has removed a compatibility block that was preventing certain Intel-based PCs from upgrading to Windows 11 version 24H2. The issue, which had persisted for approximately a year, was caused by an incompatibility with older Intel Smart Sound Technology (SST) audio drivers. Systems equipped with 11th Gen Intel Core processors were primarily affected, as the flawed drivers could cause a system crash (BSOD) during the update process.

The safeguard hold, identified as 51876952, has now been revoked after a resolution was reached. To fix the underlying problem, users must install an updated SST Audio Controller driver, version 10.29.00.5714 or later, which should be available via Windows Update. Once the compatible driver is installed, the upgrade block is automatically lifted, though it may take up to 48 hours for the 24H2 update to appear.

If the hold persists after this period, it may indicate that a suitable driver is not yet available for that specific hardware configuration. In such cases, Microsoft advises contacting the device manufacturer for further support. This is the third such compatibility block Microsoft has resolved recently, as the company continues to collaborate with Intel and OEMs to distribute necessary driver updates.
