Windows 11 Enterprise PCs Fail to Shut Down After January Security Update

Microsoft has acknowledged a new bug preventing some Windows 11 Enterprise and IoT devices from shutting down properly after installing the January 2026 security update (KB5073455). The issue specifically affects systems running version 23H2 that have the System Guard Secure Launch security feature enabled, which protects the boot process from firmware-level attacks. Instead of powering off or entering hibernation, affected devices restart automatically.

As a temporary solution, Microsoft advises users to shut down their PCs using the command prompt with the command shutdown /s /t 0. However, there is currently no workaround for systems configured to hibernate; users are urged to save their work and shut down manually to avoid battery drain. Microsoft is developing a permanent fix for this problem.

This shutdown issue is one of several bugs introduced by recent updates. Microsoft is also addressing a separate problem where the January 2026 update (KB5074109) causes Remote Desktop connection failures to Cloud PC sessions. Additionally, the company recently resolved an issue where security applications were incorrectly flagging a core Windows component as malicious.
