Windows 11 May 2026 Update Prioritizes Performance and Reliability

Microsoft is rolling out significant reliability improvements to Windows 11 through upcoming April optional and May mandatory updates, with many fixes already available in Release Preview channels. File Explorer loads faster without the white background flash in dark mode, retains folder view layouts when opened from other apps, and explorer.exe processes have been stabilized to prevent unexpected crashes. The Settings app now loads the Installed Apps page more quickly and greys out irrelevant location options when the master toggle is off.

Drop Tray features a smaller peek view to prevent accidental triggering while users interact with the top of the screen. Clipboard history opens more responsively, and storage settings for large volumes load instantly rather than taking up to fifteen seconds. Windows Hello fingerprint recognition has improved after sleep states, and biometric data now persists across system upgrades rather than requiring re-enrollment.

Startup applications launch with reduced post-boot sluggishness, and the Delivery Optimization service consumes less RAM, leaving more resources for active applications. A new kernel policy removes default trust for cross-signed drivers, accepting only Windows Hardware Compatibility Program drivers plus a specific allowlist of legacy drivers after an audit period. Administrators can enable secure batch file processing to prevent modifications during execution, and Microsoft Store installation failures for error codes like 0x80070057 have been addressed. Most improvements focus on core experiences including File Explorer, taskbar, Settings, input systems, and voice dictation rather than adding new features.
