Programs or browser extensions that show you advertising you did not ask for: pop-ups, redirects, changed search results. Adware often comes bundled with free software and can be hard to remove.
How it works
Adware gets installed together with free programs, fake updates or "useful" browser extensions, often hidden in the installer's small print. It then changes browser settings, adds ads to the pages you visit and earns money for its makers from every view and click. Some versions reinstall themselves or block removal.
How to recognize it
- Pop-ups and ads on sites that normally have none.
- Your home page or search engine changed by itself.
- Programs or browser extensions you did not install.
- Links open unexpected sites.
What it can do
- Pop-ups, redirects and ads on every site you open.
- A changed home page and search engine.
- Unwanted extensions and programs that come back after removal.
- Tracking of the sites you visit.
How to remove it
UnHackMe for Windows finds and removes adware and other threats that antivirus programs often miss. Use UnHackMe →
How to protect yourself
- Download programs only from their makers' sites.
- Choose "Custom install" and uncheck extra offers in installers.
- Install only the extensions you need, from the official store, and review them regularly.
- Keep your browser and system updated.
