How to Fix Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) Slowdowns on Computers with Integrated or Old Video Cards?

!On computers with integrated or older video cards, users sometimes encounter poor performance of applications from the Microsoft Office suite.

This may manifest itself as application freezing, screen flickering, jerky scrolling of content, blurring of fonts in text, delays in updating image content, and other similar artifacts.

This problem is associated with the incompatibility of the drivers of these video cards with the hardware graphics acceleration function in MS Office.

Therefore, the solution to the problem is mainly associated with disabling hardware graphics acceleration, but it would be a good idea to make sure that the latest drivers are installed for your video card.

To fix Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) slowdowns on computers with integrated or old video cards, just follow the next steps:

  1. If your computer has multiple GPUs, you should select the more powerful one.

To do this, use the Win + I key combination to launch the Settings application, and then go to System -> Display -> Graphics.

Once in the specified panel, click the Browse button and specify the full path to the application executable file. For example, C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\root\Office16\winword.exe.

Then click the Options button and select the video card you want to assign to the application.

  2. If this does not help, disable hardware graphics acceleration in Office.

To do this, launch the required MS Office application (for example, Excel) and go to the File -> Options -> Advanced section.

In the window that opens, enable the Disable hardware graphics acceleration option in the Display section and restart the application.

  3. In later MS Office packages, this setting is missing, and in this case, you will need to disable hardware acceleration in the Local Group Policy Editor.

To do this, use the Win + R key combination and run gpedit.msc.

In the editor, go to the User Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Microsoft Office 2016 -> Miscellaneous section and enable the Do not use hardware graphics acceleration option.

  4. You can also disable hardware acceleration using the Registry Editor.

To do this, use the Win + R key combination and run regedit.

Go to the registry branch HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Common\Graphics and add the REG_DWORD parameter DisableHardwareAcceleration with the value 1.

After that, you should restart your computer for the changes to take effect.
