The KB5083769 security update for Windows 11 versions 24H2 and 25H2 is causing failures in third-party backup applications from vendors including Acronis, Macrium Reflect, NinjaOne Backup, and UrBackup Server. The issue stems from a timeout problem within the Volume Shadow Copy Service when applications attempt to create snapshots for backup operations. VSS is a Microsoft framework introduced in Windows Server 2003 that enables coordination between the operating system, backup software, and business applications.
Acronis confirmed the problem affects Windows 11 Pro and Home editions, with backup operations failing and generating timeout errors during snapshot creation. In some cases, affected machines may also lose cloud console connectivity and appear offline. As a temporary workaround, users can uninstall the problematic KB5083769 update through Windows Update settings, pause updates, and reboot their systems.
Microsoft has not immediately responded to requests for comment on the issue. This follows other recent update problems, including out-of-band fixes for Windows Server systems experiencing restart loops and update installation failures. Microsoft also warned that some Windows Server 2025 devices may boot into BitLocker recovery mode requiring recovery keys after installing the KB5082063 update. Users affected by the backup software failures are advised to remove the April security update while awaiting an official Microsoft fix.
