Microsoft Eliminates Clean Install Requirement for Windows 11's Smart App Control

Microsoft has removed a significant barrier for its Windows 11-exclusive security feature, Smart App Control, by eliminating the mandatory clean install requirement. Previously, users could only enable this intelligent, cloud-based protection by performing a fresh installation of Windows 11. With a recent Insider build, users can now toggle the feature on or off directly through the Windows Security settings menu.

Smart App Control is designed to proactively block untrusted or potentially harmful applications before they execute. Microsoft claims this approach not only enhances security but also improves system performance compared to traditional reactive anti-malware solutions. The company suggests the feature could be particularly beneficial for PCs with limited resources, as it reduces system strain.

This change is currently available for testers in the Dev and Beta channels and is expected to reach the general public, likely in early 2026. Its arrival in the Release Preview channel will be the next indicator of its broader rollout. The update simplifies access to a key security feature and aligns with Microsoft's ongoing efforts to differentiate Windows 11 from its predecessor.
