Three Malicious Chrome VPN Extensions Discovered - Totaling 1.5 Million Downloads

Three fake Chrome VPN extensions, disguised as legitimate tools, were downloaded 1.5 million times. These malicious extensions, discovered by ReasonLabs, masqueraded as browser hijackers, cashback hacks, and data stealers. The extensions were distributed through an installer hidden in pirated copies of popular games like Grand Theft Auto, Assassins Creed, and The Sims 4 on torrent sites. After ReasonLabs notified Google, the extensions were removed from the Chrome Web Store, but not before accumulating 1.5 million downloads, with the majority of infections occurring in Russia and neighboring countries like Ukraine, Kazakhstan, and Belarus, suggesting a targeted campaign against Russian-speaking users.
