Windows 11 Enhances File Explorer with Tab Restoration and Smarter Features

Windows 11’s File Explorer introduces several updates in Build 22635.4580 (KB5046733), now in beta testing, including the ability to restore tabs upon restart. When the “Restore previous windows on logon” option is enabled, File Explorer will reopen tabs alongside windows, addressing a frequent user complaint. For smooth operation, enabling the “Automatically save my restartable apps” setting is also recommended.

Another improvement is smarter tab control, where File Explorer consolidates folder openings into new tabs within the same window instead of creating additional windows. This behavior, inspired by browsers like Edge, can be adjusted in File Explorer’s settings for users who prefer the classic experience of opening folders in separate windows.

Microsoft is also reducing the intrusiveness of OneDrive backup reminders in the File Explorer address bar. Users will soon have simpler options to snooze or dismiss these alerts directly from the interface. These updates, set to roll out widely in early 2025 with Windows 11 24H2, aim to streamline user workflows and enhance usability.
