Windows 11 Revives Video Wallpapers with Native .mp4 Support

A new native feature in Windows 11 will allow users to set video files as their desktop background, with the video playing in a continuous loop. This functionality, reminiscent of Windows Vista's DreamScene, supports common formats like .mp4, .mov, and .avi through the standard Personalization settings. Currently available in newer preview builds, the feature is expected to roll out broadly in future updates.

The implementation is designed to be simple and efficient, with no significant increase in power consumption observed during testing. Unlike more powerful third-party applications, Microsoft's version will not support interactive elements and may have a limited file format selection. The video plays seamlessly beneath open applications and the Start menu, suggesting optimization through the Desktop Window Manager.

This built-in option provides a lightweight alternative to tools like Wallpaper Engine, prioritizing system performance over advanced customization. The feature marks the return of a popular visual customization option to the Windows operating system after many years.
