How to Start Your Computer in Safe Mode

  1. Windows 2000/2003/XP/Vista/Seven/2008


    • Start your computer.
    • Immediately as the computer starts, press and hold the F8 key until the boot menu appears.
    • Select Safe mode, and then press Enter.
    • If prompted, log on as administrator.


  2. Windows 8


    • Hold the Shift button and press the F8 key. You will see "Recovery mode".
    • Click "See advanced repair options".
    • Choose "Troubleshoot".
    • Choose "Advanced options".
    • Choose "Windows Startup Settings".
    • Click Restart.

    Your PC reboots and you will be able to boot into Safe Mode.
  3. If you could not start the computer in Safe mode


    • Press the Windows + R keys to open the Run dialog box or use Windows search feature.
    • Type: msconfig
      press Enter.
      If the User Account Control window appears, accept the program execution.
    • Click OK, Restart.
    After you finish your work in Safe mode, use the System Configuration Utility to get back in Normal mode.
  4. If you have Windows 8/7/Vista,

    • Choose the Boot tab, check Safe boot.
    • Click OK, Restart.
  5. If you have Windows XP

    • Check /SAFEBOOT on the BOOT.INI tab.
    • Click OK, Restart.
